Understanding the critical role of DNS for DDoS resilience [and cyber security]

December 16, 2016

(EMEA) The global economy is rapidly moving to become digitally-based. Central to this new digital economy is the internet which support more data and real-time communication across more devices than ever before . In parallel to this, IoT is rapidly becoming adopted and this too relies on the internet to connect sensors to the analytics engines. The internet is increasingly becoming central to organizations' business strategies.

One of the most fundamental components of an organisation’s internet infrastructure is the Domain Name System (DNS). The critical role of DNS is often overlooked and not fully appreciated by many organizations. However, in the wake of one of the most complex and sophisticated distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in history, the true importance of enterprise-grade DNS has come to light.

By exploiting DNS, which can be a single point of failure, attackers have the potential to disable internet connectivity and technology systems. This therefore represents an organizations biggest risk to delivering a highly available and secure online environment.
