Survey: 73.9% of DevOps Professionals Use A Hybrid IT Infrastructure

October 25, 2017 Tom Snow

As a relatively new (albeit already Visionary) player in the cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) space, the Oracle Dyn team has been doing some man-on-the-street research at recent events to learn more about what people, especially DevOps professionals, think and feel about issues in the IaaS space. Specifically, we were trying to find out things like how they deploy their infrastructure, what success means in their roles, and what challenges face them within their organizations.

The results have definitely been interesting so far. Hybrid cloud continues to trump either all-datacenter or all-cloud, as 73.9% of the individuals surveyed so far say their IT infrastructure is a mix of datacenter and cloud – however nearly half of those are still mostly using datacenters, with only some of their workloads in the cloud.

The greatest barriers preventing people from having more trust in the cloud are concerns over loss of control and security. 65.2% of people surveyed were worried about not having direct responsibility over the infrastructure their applications ran on, while nearly half still don’t have faith that the cloud is secure enough to be the sole space for storing their data.

One of the most telling questions on the survey revolved around what it means for these professionals to be successful in their roles. The top three answers we received were “Increase productivity,” “Get assigned to or lead an important project,” and “Be seen as an innovator or thought leader in the organization.”

Doing research like this helps us at Dyn not only understand who our audience is and what matters to them, but also begin to develop our message and products to fit that. It’s important for us to remember that when we develop our story, we shouldn’t be writing the tale that we want it to be, but writing the best story for our customers.
