Other names may be trademarks of their respective owners. 1083 The motivation for the decision was based on better response times and a more comprehensive solution that provided RCS with a fully automated service to identify and block DDoS attacks in real time—while allowing their customer's traffic to flow unimpeded. "We evaluated a number of providers and selected Oracle Dyn because they offered the required technical solution, as well as the flexibility we require in our operating environment," noted Nicolas Truyens, IT Manager of RCS. DDoS Protection at Work Considering the threat landscape and the increasing trend for larger DDoS attacks, RCS decided to take a proactive approach and invest in technologies that would keep their service running in the increasingly likely event of a DDoS attack. The DDoS detection and mitigation which was in place prior to the deployment of the Oracle Dyn solution addressed the problem by dropping/blocking offending traffic (blackholing) to/from certain IP address blocks, rather than scrubbing (separating the good traffic from the bad). This was not adequate from the perspective of RCS. They were looking for a proactive solution that would allow them to continue to keep clients up and running, even in the event of an attack. The Oracle Dyn solution offered RCS the best of both worlds. By using Oracle Dyn's RapidBGP technology, RCS maintained optimized performance. They were able to do this by automating the process of identifying an attack and only routing traffic through the DDoS service when an attack occurs; all the while keeping costs in check. RCS also selected Oracle Dyn for its ability to eliminate the effects of a variety of attacks automatically at the network layer within high-capacity DDoS scrubbing centers. The scrubbing takes place at centers in North America, as well as locations in Western Europe and Asia Pacific. The centers are globally distributed to minimize latency.
